Manila Sports Provide a Great Experience For All.

Manila sports and YES, I do mean in the plural sense (more than Basketball) are an integral part of the Manila lifestyle. The top ten are Boxing, Raquet, Water, Cockfighting, Volleyball, Soccer, Fitness, Cycling, Dance & Basketball. Some activities like Chess and Pool are widely played but are considered as games to many and are not included. Other sports fall under the direction of an Athletic Department, but athletics has not yet made this list. Shooting clubs are readily available but I'll leave that "sport" alone for now since gun laws are quite prickly. Siyempre, Basketball is ubiquitous and can be played in virtually any of the 905 recognized barangays and various facilities are available to fuel your competitive fires or satisfy your viewing delight. Manila sports are a vibrant part of life here.

Here is a website that I wrote about called iPhilippinesSport that will keep you updated on many sporting categories to include downloads, Basketball, Billiards, Boxing, Football and University sports. Please read the article here: Sport News Website.

Manila Top Ten Sports:

Note: For 2010 World Cup links & Info, skip to the bottom of this page.

10/28/2011 Note: In 2022, when the Philippines Men's team has a realistic opportunity to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, soccer/football/futbol will be the number one sport in the Philippines, in my humble opinion. Read a report on the LA Galaxy coming to Rizal Sports Colliseum here:

LA Galaxy get Ready to Battle N.Y. & Come to face the Azkals in the Philippines as MLS Champions?

(10) Football/Soccer/Futsal: The Philippines is currently ranked 169 in the world and considering that only 32 teams qualify every 4 years to compete in the FIFA World Cup, they have a long way to go. The good news is that there is a burgeoning grass roots movement which the Philippine Football Federation is taking on the road this summer, and with only 35 nations ranked higher in the AFC, their rise to becoming a nation to be reckoned with, has huge potential.

The Azkals have a good chance to participate in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, 2022. That is my opinion. For Brazil, I have suggested that Sir Alex Ferguson should be considered to manage the 3 Lions, should England qualify for that FIFA World Cup in Brazil in 2014.

(9) Cycling: Numerous denizens navigate the maze of traffic on a daily basis and since The Tour de Luzon made a return in 2010, there is a large pool of enthusiasts to sponsor and draw from to participate going forward.

Reuters Video on YouTube showing about 8,000 cyclists participating in an Earth Day timeline event.

(8) Fitness: Opportunities to escape the smog of the city are a necessary anti-oxidant to living in Manila. Many hotels and businesses like call-centers, provide on-site facilities while small gyms and work-out locations are scattered around the city. FitnessFirst offers a free trial and combines an overall fitness profile as well as including a membership exchange benefit. It is up to you if the cost meets your budget or not.

(7) Raquet-Tennis, Table tennis, Badminton: Many condominium communities include a badminton court, and improvised table tennis locations pop up at many turns. For tennis, you will likely pay to play, even if at an abandoned warehouse or join a sports club like the Nomads.

A great resorce on Badminton with news, tournaments, tips & more is yourbadminton.com. Here is their listing on available courts in manila; check for fees, hours and membership requirements before going. Remember you don't need a court to enjoy this fun sport!

Update: Nov 1, 2010, The International Tennis Federation is serving up the "$10,000 Manila 2010" on the Womens Circuit. The tournament runs from 01 November - 07 November 2010 at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

Here is the Fact Sheet for tournament.

Good luck to all the participants!

Feel free to try the Customized Google Search for Sports in Manila and the Philippines below; I want it to produce good results for you. If not, let me know!

(6) Water-Surfing, Diving, Swimming, Kite Surfing: While the north beach at Boracay is awash with with Kite Surfers daily and one can get instruction and be out on the water in less that an hour - Nothing Extreme About That - you will need to take a domestic flight to Caticlan or Kalibo to get there. In Manila, there are many private pools that offer swimming for a fee or you can check with a nearby resort (see link below) or during rainy season, just find a big puddle, but not Manila Bay!

(5) Boxing: Manny Pacquiao is one of the most famous sporting icons alive. This facility in Paranaque, where PacMan trained for a day prior to his demolition of HitMan Hatton offers a one-hour training session for under $4.00; all you need to do is show up, no appointment necessary but I recommend going in the morning due to the heat.

(Link down; temporarily?) The Manny Pacquiao Foundation is one with a knock-out delivery as shown with this distribution of aid.

Do you know anyone in SF? There is the San Francisco Giants Filipino Heritage Night on April 27th at AT&T Park as the Giants take on the Philadelphia Phillies. A portion of the tickets sold will go to benefit the Manny Pacquiao Foundation as well as other "local" Filipino charities.

Tickets for the event are a lot less than the $63 you could pay for a premium ticket; a good way to put the * era in perspective.

For charities in manila , please review the information here on manila top ten.

5/7/2010: I have just published a boxing article that can be viewed via the triond box below in green.

Leo Reyes reports on 8/25/2010, that Manny Pacquaio is leaving for the U.S. to promote his fight with Antonio Margarito.

The fight is scheduled for November 13th and I commend Manny for taking the fight against a man that was found wanting in sportsmanship. Margarito is fortunate to be sanctioned to ever fight again since he was found to be using fixed gloves in a previous bout.

"Margarito was stripped of his license to fight in California when boxing regulators discovered a plaster-like object inside his hand wraps minutes before he climbed the ring to face Shane Mosley at the Staples Center in Los Angeles."

(4) Volleyball: The University of Santo Thomas swept both the Men's and Women's competitions in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) tournaments for 2010. Both were televised and widely supported; one can often join in an impromptu volleyball practice on a side-street - no need to go to the beach. For Sporting news in Manila, why not check out Philippine Online Chronicles?

(3) Dance: Dancing is included in the Olympics, so it is considered a sport by an international body. Whether it's a Kindergarten group dancing to the Korean tune Nobody But You, a team in front of thousands of specators or 50% of the work-force in a department store, you can literally dance the days and nights away in Manila. The Cultural Center of the Philippines is catching this pulse and further promotions are inevitable to include combining more modern dance into the Fiestas.

(2) Cockfighting: Considered a blood sport yet at least it's not human blood being spilt. Come to your own conclusions on Sabong. Watch a Video here.

(1) Basketball: You don't need a league, team or even shoes to play basketball here in Manila. While the PBA, PBL, WPBL etc. display the professionals, there is an amazing array of talented players in every nook and cranny to be found and you don't have to take the ball since it will be there already! The Harlem Globtrotters put on a decent display at the Araneta Coliseum when I took two young guys with me for the show but I've been more impressed with the street talent. This is not the "Gilbert-O" running for office in May, 2010, but perhaps Mr. Arenas can store his weapons here? (see the photo in the link courtesy of Sandro Paredes.

Here is a Basketball Related article that I wrote in May, 2010 on A.I. titled One of The Top Ten Athletes of All Time: Allen Iverson.

As most everyone is aware, Lebron James is now with the Miami Heat and wearing number 6, as did Dr. J. Their coach has been given the green light by Pat Riley and Filipino-American coach Erik Spoelstra has quite an amazing year ahead!

This link to loqal.ph has a video of the Coach and his recent week-long trip to the Philippines. The article is titled Miami Heat’s ‘Coach Spo’ shares his secrets to success.

Another NBA star who is sporting a championship ring, Ron Artest, has a Manila connection as reported by Joaquin Henson, in the Philippine Star on July 30, 2010, in an article titled "Ron Artest eager for son's RP trip."

"Jerron’s Filipina mother Jennifer Uy Palma was only 18 when she gave birth to Artest’s son. Her brother James is a music producer who performs with the rap band Q York, manages the Philippine All-Stars dance troupe and owns a recording studio in Mandaluyong."

“Jerron has never been to the Philippines and we, his relatives, are hoping to see him,” said Jennifer’s first cousin Veronica Uy Ramos who lives in Paranaque. “We understand Ron wants to jam with James and look into the music business in the Philippines. He wants to meet Jerron’s Filipino family.”

Update 4/18/2010: Golf Enthusiasts will want to visit and/or participate in the The Mount Malarayat Golf and Country Club's 2010 Liberica Golf Invitational in Lipa City, Batangas this weekend.

Note: If you are an avid golfer here in Manila, feel free to contact manilatop10. I'm a Par 3 fan only and have fond memories of making golf a family sport in the desert & while traveling through Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; it's a great outdoor historical civil war area to tour.

Club Intramuros charges quite a bit for their non-resident fees: Php 1,400 plus a caddy fee of Php 300 & night golf is higher. If that's your "bag" and you want to "tee" off at the Walls, contact sales@philtourism.gov.ph.
