Charity Note: Congratulations to the Binibining Pilipinas Winners

The SMART Araneta Coliseum hosted the 2010 Binibining Pilipinas Coronation Night March 6th. Winners were selected to represent the Philippines in the Miss World, Universe and World competitions. Miss World representative for the Philippines will be Miss Czarina Catherine Gatbonton. She was uniquely the only contestant to respond in the question segment in her heartfelt native tongue and would do well to be the country's first winner in that category, although I would have liked there to have been a translator on stage for me to understand her response; (see translation below). Best wishes to all the winners. (The annual Binibining Pilipinas Beauty Pageant is a project of Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Incorporated (BPCI), a non-stock, non-profit organization founded by its chair, Stella Marquez Araneta. Here are the 2010 Binibining Pilipinas.

Update: 3/30/2010, The reigning Binibining Pilipinas-Universe Maria Venus Raj has been dethroned after beauty pageant organizers found "inconsistencies" on her birth certificate. Runner-up Helen Nicolette Henson will now represent the country in the Miss Universe Pageant.

Update: 04/06/2010 "Dethroned Binibining Pilipinas-Universe Maria Venus Raj has found an ally in Commission on Human Rights chair Leila de Lima. In her statement sent to ABS-CBN News, De Lima said she is concerned about Raj’s situation. The Filipino-Indian beauty from Camarines Sur was dethroned due to “inconsistencies” in her birth records."

Update: 04/11/2010 Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc.(BPCI) has said that Maria Venus Raj can "RE"-claim the Binibining Pilipinas-Universe (Miss Universe-Philippines) title it had accorded to her on March 6, provided that she can present a valid Philippine passport. In her own advocacy, "Raj claimed she was born in Qatar to a Filipina mother and an Indian father & was only a month old when her mother took her to the Philippines."

Update: 04/12/2010 Dethroned beauty queen Maria Venus Raj will not be given any special treatment when she applies for a Philippine passport, an official of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Monday. My curiosity points to the fact that Miss Raj MET all the requirements to compete in the March contest so why is having a passport not one of them? Winners travel diba!

Since the Filipino word puno is tree in English, I believe this an accurate translation of Miss World Representative, Miss Czarina Catherine Gatbonton's answer to the question of “Given another life, what would you like to be and why?" "I would like to answer the question in our national language. Given another life, I would like to be a tree that allows us to breathe and live. Thank you)." Courtesty of the Manila Bulletin.

John Berthelsen on Monday, 4/19, wrote a comprehensive article on this issue. Here is the link courtesy of asiasentinel.

Update 5/14/2010 from ABS-CBN, "Venus Raj is still Bb. Pilipinas-Universe" . The Department of Foreign Affairs issued her a passport - manila people confirmation :)

Update, 08/04/2010, As written by Armin Adina on the PDI, "Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI) founder and chairperson Stella Marquez-Araneta told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that Raj has been selected by the Miss Universe organization to help promote the pageant."

The pageant is set to open on August 23rd in Las Vegas, Nevada.Brett Michaels and Natalie Morales are set to be the hosts.

It will have a Trump-like feel I'm sure ;)

Post Miss Universe thoughts:

The unexpected and tragic death of Bb. Pilipinas International 2009 Melody Gersbach in a road crash here in the Philippines on 8/21/2010 must have been hard on Venus.

By many accounts, Venus was one of the most popular contestants in Las Vegas and had a legitimate shot at pipping the crown. With only 83 of the world's countries represented, why not?

Even after the contest and crowning of Miss Mexico, Ximena Navarrete, as the winner, Venus has the honor of holding the highest rating of 3.54. Miss Universe Contestant Ratings.

Miss Australia, Jesinta Campbell, won an award leading up to the finale, while Miss Thailand, Fonthip Watcharatrakul, garnered two!

The video shows the questions and responses of the top 5 finalists:

Mexico: Internet question on the impact of unsupervised internet access on youth.

Ximena answered in her native tongue, with the aid of a translator and did a decent job of recognizing the positive benefits of the internet and speaking generally about the necessary controls on internet use and tying family values into her response at the end sent a positive message.

Australia: Legislation banning religious clothing and governmental role in determining personal preference.

Jesinta answered in a bubbly and effusive manner and highlighted the freedoms expressed by the contestants of 2010 while including a local quote. It was a decent answer yet it steered well clear of addressing those governments where freedom of expression is suppressed.

Jamaica: The practice of the Death Penalty; acceptable yes or no?

Yendi explained that life is a gift and no human has the right to take that away. By introducing God and not differentiating between methods of the death penalty, she answered on a personal level which fit well with her yet perhaps did not recognize its ubiquity in use around the globe and how that can be changed.

Ukraine: Full body scanners at airports; asked for a personal reply.

Anna utilized a translator and nailed her response clearly to the essence of its emerging acceptance, security. A great answer, yet she could have added a little more somehow.

Philippines: Asked what is your big mistake and what was done to make it right.

Venus took the most personal and perhaps most negative of all questions and chose to ignore the potential of its essence, i.e. learning from our own mistakes or from those around us that err. By refusing to accept the premise of the question, Venus was not able to offer a follow-up and uplifting lesson learned which took the shine off of her response, much more than the commotion that has been made in the local media about her double usage of the word major.

Many words here are repeated such as going to market-market though this may not have been a part of her repeated usage. I have no reason to think of it as a serious blunder above and beyond the content of her answer, which seemingly diminished the incredible journey that her own life has taken and the publicized obstacles that have been overcome in becoming a wonderful spokesperson for the Philippines. It was a lost opportunity to recognize something that was overcome, even if Venus was "forced" into calling it a "mistake" by the question.

Venus in her evening gown with a touch of irony since it has a flair that connects to the eventual winner, Miss Mexico. Great job Maria Venus Raj and congratulations to all the winners.

As for the adoption and implementation of translators for future contests in the Philippines and their winners when competing in International competitions, I think it is a great idea.

Firstly, there are many dialects spoken here and that alone allows responses to be more accurately stated. On the international level, the preciseness and etiquette of the translators is seamless and actually calms the contestants rather than showing a weakness. It also provides the power of two in answering questions and allows for the contestant to answer in multiple languages without being penalized for any perceived language gaffes.

Update 9/14/2010:

"The Manila City Hall presented Miss Universe fourth runner-up Venus Raj the key to the city of Manila on Tuesday and declared her an adopted daughter of the city when she paid a courtesy call on Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim."

Jong represents the Filipino's willingness to "meet" visitors here in the Philippines; this shot taken simply as I was crossing the street and illustrates how some choose a break from traditional looks with their reach for individuality.

Part 1 of 3 titled the "Empowered Filipina" puts faces on some of the statistics we all know. As the 2008 movie "Caregiver" starring Sharon Cuneta illustrated, certification recognition around the globe does not represent the true qualifications of many Filipinos.

While Sharon/Sarah becomes empowered through her courageous stand as a caregiver in support of her "far-away" son and embraces "family" in the U.K. during her work abroad, her husband succumbs to the somewhat demeaning and limited opportunities and returns to the Philippines to soothe his soul.

For such a diverse populous, YOU will likely meet people with similar names which definitely encourages the use of nicknames for manila people here in the Philippines.
