Manila Culture: A Cultured Approach to life promotes harmony in any situation.
A recommended & affordable primer on Filipino & Manila Culture that I read in 2007 is Culture Smart. At a reasonable cost of $10, it offers some essential insights into the customs here in the Philippines. For a review of some other books on Manila and the Philippine Islands, you can view the listings on the manila books page.
Filipinos are renowned for their Hospitality and Mabuhay spirit in welcoming others. Their cultural pride exudes ever more so due to the reality that dance & music are so closely entwined with their day-2-day living. Something enchantingly charismatic resonates within 99.9% of the Filipinos that I've met and it is tangibly felt and joining in is made effortlessly possible. Indeed, it is common to come across budding & accomplished artists in any surrounding.
Bayanihan, the national dance company, promotes Filipino pride through their performances. Shows include authentic dress, dance, music & percussion which translates into a memorable event.
A recent performance in February, 2010, cost Php 100 only to attend at the Philippine Women's University in Malate, Manila. Catch one of their Upcoming Shows embracing Manila Culture.
Expectedly, many Filipinos rise to a scintillating level and astonish audiences both within the Philippines and around the globe with their joyous and passionate performances. Aside from famous pop stars like Arnel Pineda who is the current lead singer of the rock band Journey & artists in numerous disciplines, the traditional culture is represented well.
An article,"Youths restore historical sites" by Escuela Taller is an encouraging story that shows, given the means to contribute, people often choose to do so. The projects included working near the Rizal Shrine in Fort Santiago. This area is both educational and an enjoyable walk-through with Kalesa rides on offer to tour adjacent sites of historical significance.
In part, "Through Escuela Taller, a partnership between the National Commission of Culture and the Arts and the Spanish government, participants are taught to hone their workmanship skills by restoring historical sites in Metro Manila." ...
The following folk tale, The Origin of Dewdrops was published if I remember correctly in one of the Mabuhay Magazines. It comes courtesy of Damiana L. Eugenio and was originally published by the University of the Philippines Press/www.press.up.edu.ph. It introduces the reader to the term "basi" which is a very, very sweet Ilocano sugar cane wine. The tale gives a "tearful" meaning to the love of morning awakenings. Hope you Enjoy!

I recently chanced upon this location near Star City in downtown Manila. It is slightly north of the SM Mall of Asia and toward the Senate building. They host a cultural presentation that is geared toward the whole family.
It is presented at 8 p.m six nights a week under the heading, Amazing Show, and claims to be "The Philippines' Premiere Theatrical Family Show."
Be sure to check it out on your visit or stay in Manila.
Note: the Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company will be performing at the Cultural Center of the Philippines from September 17-18th.
The show on the 17th is at 8 P.M. followed the next day with a performance at 3 P.M.
