The World Bank has upgraded its growth outlook for the Philippines in 2010 to 3.5% from 3.1%. One contributing factor is the expected increases in OFW remittances that were originally seen to take a bigger hit due to the global economic crisis. Having read where some countries have greatly reduced their hiring practices, it seems reasonable to accept that many of these workers were realigned to another location, along with the growth in other places, such as the upcoming hiring’s in Guam.
This Business Mirror article just out today, confirms that Guam is of regional interest. It captures some of the forecasted effects of the build-up in Guam. Guam was recently promoting tourism at the SMX Convention center adjacent to the Mall of Asia and one of the owners of a Overseas Employment Agency assured me last month that coordinated preparations are underway. All signs point toward job placements that are closer to home for many Filipinos, since Guam is 3hrs and 40mins to the East by air travel.

Perhaps, once the National Elections are finalized and a "peaceful" transition takes place, the continued growth in the northern "free" economic zones will continue and spread more.

I have a deep appreciation for the Overseas Filipino Worker, and will delve into that topic soon. I stopped into a POEA office today that was full of applicants and this particular location was only serving one country in the Middle East!
As a primer, I recommend watching some of the movies that tackle the complexity of this integral part of the Filipino presence around the globe.
Watch the movie from 2005, "Miss Pinoy" which shows how hard it can be to make good use of money earned abroad & "Caregiver" from 2008 which illustrates the the focus required to triumph no matter the obstacle faced.
According to Bloomberg, dated May 17th, 2010, "Money sent back to the Philippines increased 5.6 percent from a year earlier to $1.55 billion in March, the central bank said in a statement in Manila today. The funds rose 7.1 percent in February." It is a huge part of the economy here!
